Hello!

My name is John Bennett, and my fascination with Victoria Stone began in January 1994, when I first encountered it at Cloud’s Gemboree in Quartzsite, Arizona.

I was immediately captivated — by its vivid colours, its remarkable chatoyancy, and the way the light seemed to bring the stone to life, shifting and shimmering with every movement. I purchased several slices and had a green stone cut and set as a bolo tie. I still wear it.

When I learned that Victoria Stone was no longer in production, I was disappointed. I resolved then and there to add its recreation to my bucket list.

In 2001 and 2002, I made my first serious attempts, contacting Artur Birkner — a chemist and geologist of considerable accomplishment, best known for developing the Biron Hydrothermal Emerald around 1990. At the time, Artur was occupied with other commitments and was unable to assist. The project was set aside.

When I returned to Western Australia in July 2012, the idea was rekindled. Artur had by then largely retired, and he graciously agreed to join me in the endeavour. What followed were years of patient work, careful experimentation, and no small number of setbacks — but we persevered.

The result is Starburst Stone. It is not Victoria Stone, nor do we claim it to be. But we are proud of what we have achieved, and we believe it stands as a worthy and respectful recreation of that remarkable original.

Starburst Stone is available as rough unworked material, whole or part boules, sawn slices, and finished cabochons. We hope you enjoy it.
